According to fossil records, sabre-tooth cats roamed parts of North America and Europe for more than 56 million years, only becoming extinct around 11,000 years ago.
These cats are notable for their sharp, blade-like teeth that extrude from the sides of their jaw. The Smilodon was about the size of the modern African lion and paleontologists believe that its teeth may have been used for stabbing and slashing attacks.
Many well preserved bones of Sabre-Tooth cats have been discovered in Los Angeles at the La Brea Tar Pits.
